From the Pastor's Study

The 4th of July is a significant day in the history of our nation. As we celebrate our independence, we often consider the blessings of being citizens of a nation that cherishes freedom. Freedom is important to us! Yet, in our pursuit of freedom, have we lost our understanding of the word? Some people may think that freedom provides us the right to cast off all restraint and do whatever we please. If that is our concept of freedom, then we have lost freedom’s meaning. Our founding fathers would never have imagined a government that separated itself from dependence and reliance on God. On the contrary, they not only expected our nation to rely on God, they continually reminded themselves and us to depend on Him.

Throughout our history, our nation has sought ways to remind ourselves to depend upon God. Our leaders have spent time in prayer seeking God’s direction and blessings, added the motto “In God We Trust” to our coinage, added “One nation under God” to our national Pledge of Allegiance, and sang the song “God Bless America” to bring comfort from our national grief. Today more than ever, we must seek to become dependent on God. True freedom is found only when we live within the guidelines of our Creator. Our freedom as a nation was not meant to lead us to cast off God, but to pursue Him. So as we celebrate the 4th of July, let us thank God for our independence as a nation and our dependence on Him!

To God Be the Glory!
